On most K-12 renovation and mechanical replacement work, the field crew has roughly the period between the last day of one school year and teacher return in the next. That is a genuinely fixed deadline, not a soft target, and everything upstream of it compresses.
For a fabricator, that means the useful work happens before the window opens. Detailing, approval, fabrication, and staging should be finished, so the crew spends the window installing rather than waiting. A package that is still being fabricated in week two of a six-week window has already cost the project more than it can recover.
The practical consequence is that award-to-install lead time matters more than shop speed. The earlier JMC's engineering can start detailing against an approved submittal, the more of the package can be complete and staged on the shop floor before the field mobilizes.
Four things separate a school package from a general commercial one:
- Fixed, non-negotiable install window: Fabrication and staging complete before mobilization, with the load order matching the crew's room-by-room or wing-by-wing sequence.
- Public bid documentation: Publicly funded work carries submittal, material certification, and closeout requirements that are named in the bid documents and audited later. The documentation set is scoped at RFQ, not assembled at the end.
- Acoustic considerations: Classrooms are noise-sensitive spaces. Where the specification calls for liner or double-wall construction on air handler connections and in-classroom runs, that changes the fabrication.
- Phased campus work: Universities often run multi-building programs across several summers, where the same details repeat building to building and consistency across phases is worth as much as speed.
Both are education, but the project shape is different:

University work is not uniformly standard commercial. Science buildings and research space bring fume exhaust, higher pressure classes, and material changes where the specification calls for corrosion resistance. That scope looks more like the healthcare or industrial end of JMC's duct work than the classroom end.
The distinction matters at RFQ. A campus package that is 90 percent classroom galvanized and 10 percent lab exhaust in stainless prices very differently than a package quoted as uniform commercial duct, and finding that out during fabrication is worse than finding it out during pricing.

Does JMC fabricate duct for school projects?

Can JMC hit a summer shutdown window?
That depends on how much lead time exists between award and mobilization, which is the honest answer rather than a blanket yes. Send the award date, the window dates, and the scope, and JMC's project management will say whether the package can be fabricated and staged in time or whether it needs to ship in tranches.
Does JMC handle the documentation public bid work requires?
Yes. Mill certificates, material traceability, SMACNA construction class records, and project-specific submittal and closeout items are scoped at the RFQ stage so they exist when the audit happens rather than being reconstructed afterward.
What about lab and fume exhaust duct on a university project?
That is a different construction scope than classroom duct, often higher pressure class and sometimes stainless where the specification calls for corrosion resistance. Flag it in the RFQ so it is priced as its own scope rather than absorbed into the commercial quote.
Can JMC keep details consistent across a multi-year campus program?
Yes, and that is one of the real advantages of repeat work. Once a detail set is approved on building one, the repeats fabricate from the same details, which keeps dimensional consistency and shortens the detailing cycle on later phases.
