WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN A PIPE FABRICATION CONTRACTOR FOR OIL AND GAS PROJECTS?
On oil and gas work, the pipe fabrication contractor you pick decides more than price and schedule. They decide whether the spools show up with the paperwork the project needs to be turned over. The shops that look the same on a bid list separate quickly once you ask about procedures, traceability, and documentation.

- Qualified weld procedures for your materials — Ask for the list of qualified welding procedures (WPS and the supporting PQRs) and check it against your line classes. A shop that runs carbon steel all day may not have a qualified procedure for your stainless, chrome-moly, or low-temperature carbon lines, and qualifying one mid-job costs weeks.
- Welder qualifications and continuity records — Procedures cover the method. Welder performance qualifications cover the people. Ask how the shop tracks continuity, because a qualification that's lapsed on paper is a problem at turnover even if the welds are good.
- Material traceability that starts at receiving — If your spec needs heat-level traceability, the shop has to transfer heat numbers as material is cut, not reconstruct them later. Ask to see how an MTR gets tied to a cut piece and then to a weld number on a real past job.
- NDE and testing, and who performs it — Find out which examination methods the project needs, radiography, ultrasonic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, and who performs them, in-house or a third party. Same question for hydrostatic and pneumatic testing: where it's done and how it's recorded.
- Spool detailing and drawing control — A contractor who can spool out line isometrics and control revisions saves the engineering team a step. One who can't will build to whatever revision they happen to have.
- Turnover package format — Ask for a sample closeout package. It should tie drawings, weld logs, NDE reports, MTRs, and test records together by spool number, in the format your project or owner requires.
Most process piping on oil and gas and petrochemical work is built to ASME B31.3. It sets the requirements for design, materials, fabrication, examination, and testing, and the contractor has to work inside that framework. It doesn't carry a code stamp the way some other ASME work does.
If your scope includes boiler external piping, pressure vessels, or other stamped work, confirm the contractor holds the specific ASME certificate that scope requires. Don't assume a general piping shop has it.
Spools are bulky, and freight adds up fast. A fabricator on the I-10 corridor can reach job sites from the Houston Ship Channel to Mobile Bay by truck. That shortens the loop when a spool needs a revision or a missed piece has to ship the next day.
Distance also affects how easy it is to inspect in progress. Owner and EPC inspectors can visit a shop a few hours away for witness points like hydro tests and final dimensional checks. A shop across the country usually gets inspected by paperwork only.
Contractors can only quote what they can see. A complete package gets you comparable bids:
- Line isometrics or spool drawings, with revision levels
- Piping material specification and line list
- Governing code and any owner or project specifications
- NDE percentages and test requirements by line class
- Traceability and documentation requirements
- Coating, painting, or insulation prep requirements
- Delivery location, sequence, and schedule
The cheapest spool isn't the one on the lowest bid. It's the one that fits, passes inspection, and comes with records that close out the job without a scramble. Ask about procedures, qualifications, traceability, NDE, and turnover before you award, not after.
